How to Validate Your VLS-TS in France: 2026 Steps, Fees and Deadlines

If you arrived in France on a student long-stay visa marked VLS-TS, you must validate it online within 3 months of arriving. This guide gives the steps, the 2026 amounts (the official student validation tax is €100, up from €50 on 1 May 2026), the new €877.50 monthly resources threshold from 1 August 2026, what happens next, and the points that are still unclear.

A student visa marked VLS-TS (visa de long séjour valant titre de séjour) works as both your visa and your first residence permit, but only after you validate it online. Miss that step and you can fall out of regular status, even though the visa sticker is still valid. The process takes about 15 minutes. What trips students up is the deadline, the payment and out-of-date fee information, which is why this guide uses the official pages first and flags where sources disagree.

‍

In short

Validate on the Ministry of the Interior's online service within 3 months of arriving in France. Pay the €100 student tax. Download the confirmation PDF and keep it. Do not rely on guides that quote €150 for validation: the official Service-Public page says €100. About 4 months before your VLS-TS expires, start your renewal (the window closes 2 months before expiry).

‍

1. Who needs to validate

You need to validate if your visa says VLS-TS and covers a stay of 4 months to 1 year. The deadline is 3 months from the day you enter France, not from the day the visa starts (Service-Public; also stated by the Préfecture de la Gironde). If you are on a short stay (no VLS-TS), this step does not apply. Online validation keeps you in regular status and lets you cross the Schengen border again.

‍

2. Step by step

Step 1. Have your details ready: passport and visa (visa number and dates), your date of entry into France, your French address, an email address and phone number, and a way to pay (see step 4). Universities also advise keeping your enrolment certificate and travel ticket as proof of entry.

Step 2. Open the online service: start from the Service-Public page Étudiant étranger en France and follow the link to validate a VLS-TS and pay the tax. This leads to the Interior Ministry's ANEF site.

Step 3. Enter the visa and entry details: visa number, validity dates, date of arrival and address in France. Check the address carefully: letters from the administration go there.

Step 4. Pay the tax: the official amount for a student is €100 (see section 3). University guides say you pay with an electronic tax stamp bought online or a paper stamp from a tobacconist, while some private guides say bank card. Pay with whatever ANEF offers you.

Step 5. Download the confirmation: you receive a PDF validation certificate. Save several copies. It is your proof of regular status until you renew or receive your permit.

Tip: Validate in your first week. It is easy to lose track of the 3-month limit while you settle in, and a late validation can mean trouble with renewals, banks and aid. Only enter your details and pay on the official ANEF service, never on a look-alike website.

‍

3. The 2026 fees: what changed on 1 May

Article 128 of the 2026 finance law (Law no. 2026-103 of 19 February 2026) raised residence-permit taxes from 1 May 2026. These are the amounts that matter for students. The reduced rate is the one students pay.

Warning: Several guides quote €150 (€100 tax + €50 stamp) for VLS-TS validation. The official pages we found do not support that: Service-Public says the validation tax is €100, and a university guide updated in June 2026 also says €100. The €150 figure is the first-permit total. Confirm the amount shown on the payment screen before you pay.

‍

4. After you validate

  • OFII and the medical visit: most long-stay visa holders get a medical appointment from the immigration office (OFII), but students are generally exempt (The Local, April 2025, a secondary source). Service-Public does not mention it for students. If OFII does send you a convocation to the address you entered, attend it.
  • Work: students can work up to 964 hours a year. If your VLS-TS is for 6 months, you also need a work authorisation (university guide, PSL).
  • Travel: your validation certificate lets you re-enter the Schengen area (Service-Public). If you plan to leave France soon, validate first.
  • Renewal: apply online no earlier than 4 months and no later than 2 months before your document expires (Service-Public). You will need your enrolment certificate for the coming year, transcripts, proof of resources and proof of address.

5. What has changed, and what may be coming

1 Aug 2026Minimum funds for long-stay study visas rise from €615 to €877.50 a month (decree no. 2026-526 of 22 June 2026). Students who got their visa under the old threshold must meet the one in force on their renewal date for stays over one year.In force. Campus France page, 24 Jul 2026
2026Level A2 French reported for multi-year permits instead of A1.Reported by a private legal site (15 Jun 2026); not confirmed on an official page
2027The 2027 finance bill (filed 1 Oct 2026) is still being debated in the National Assembly. Student-related items found: a freeze of APL scales (art. 74) and, from 1 Sep 2027, a choice between the student's APL and the parents' tax attachment for better-off households (art. 78). Neither is adopted. Not adopted as of 2 Nov 2026 (MoneyVox, ImmoJeune). We found nothing on residence-permit or VLS-TS taxes in it, but could not read the full bill text

Practical consequence: if you renew in 2026 or 2027, budget at least €877.50 a month in proof of resources and the higher tax. Rules change often, so check the Service-Public page on the day you file.

‍

6. Common mistakes

  • Waiting until week 12 to validate, or counting the 3 months from the visa start date
  • Entering an old or wrong address, so letters never reach you
  • Paying on a website that is not the official service, or assuming €150 for validation without checking the screen
  • Confusing the VLS-TS with a residence card: they are different documents, and you will need to renew the VLS-TS before it expires
  • Applying to renew too late. A late renewal adds €180 on top of the normal tax

‍

Frequently asked questions

1. What if I miss the 3-month deadline?

Secondary guides say validation becomes impossible and your situation irregular. Contact your prefecture or your school's international office as soon as you notice.

‍

2. Can I validate before I enter France?

No. The entry date is part of the procedure, so you validate after you arrive.

‍

3. How much does validation cost for a student?

€100 according to Service-Public (verified 1 August 2026). Private guides quoting €150 are not supported by the official page we checked.

‍

4. Do I need to see OFII?

Students are generally exempt from the medical visit, per a secondary source, but if you receive a convocation, attend.

Sources and methodology

Compiled on 3 November 2026. We ranked official pages first. Where secondary guides disagree with Service-Public (the validation amount, the renewal amount and OFII), we say so. We could not open the ANEF payment screen itself, so the payment method is taken from university guides and may differ on the day. The 2027 finance bill was checked on 3 November 2026 through the Assemblée nationale dossier and press trackers, not by reading the full bill text.
